Am thailändischen Neujahrsfest begrüßen wir das Jahr 2554 und liefern uns eine viertägige Wasserschlacht mit Tausenden Einheimischen und »Farangs«, wie die westlichen Ausländer im Land des Lächelns genannt werden. Ich tauche im Koh-Similan-Nationalpark, dessen Unterwasserwelt zu den zehn schönsten Tauchspots der Welt zählt, und lerne neue »exotische« Möglichkeiten kennen, mir den Hintern abzuputzen.
Bei einem einwöchigen Abstecher nach Kambodscha bestaunen wir die historischen Tempelanlagen von Angkor und in Kuala Lumpur die modernen Petronas Towers. In Bangkok landen wir in der Demomeile der sogenannten Rothemden, deren Ruf nach Demokratie Thailand im schlimmsten Fall in einen Bürgerkrieg reißen wird. Und das sind nur einige Stationen auf der achtwöchigen Reise durch den paradiesischen Südosten Asiens und der Suche nach dem besten Curry der Welt …

From February to April 2010, Rebekka and I, Dennis Knickel, travel through Thailand. On our journey, we meet the writer Klaus Sebastian, who has just adopted an abandoned baby monkey. We spend the night at the On On Hotel, made world-famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film "The Beach," meet like-minded backpackers at the Giant Guest House in Chiang Mai and live in bungalows where monkeys occasionally jump around on the roofs.
During the Thai New Year festival, we welcome the year 2554 and engage in a four-day water fight with thousands of locals and "farangs," as Western foreigners are called in the Land of Smiles. I dive in Koh Similan National Park, whose underwater world is considered one of the ten most beautiful dive spots in the world, and discover new "exotic" ways of wiping my backside.
During a one-week side trip to Cambodia, we marvel at the historic temple complexes of Angkor and, in Kuala Lumpur, the modern Petronas Towers. In Bangkok, we end up on the demonstration mile of the so-called Red Shirts, whose call for democracy could, in the worst case, tear Thailand into a civil war.
