Halleluja! »Erinnerungen« ist für einen hoch dotierten Preis nominiert!

Ich stehe im Newsletterverteiler von so manchem Festival und Festivaleinreichportal. Hin und wieder springt mir dann mal ein per Mail angepriesenes Festival ins Auge und sehr selten kommt es vor, dass ich heute noch »Erinnerungen« bei einem solchen Festival einreiche. Vor knapp drei Wochen war es wieder so weit: Das Viewster Online Film Festival (VOFF) geht mit dem Thema »Relationship Status: It’s Complicated« ab Juni in seine zweite Ausgabe. »Relationship Status: It’s Complicated«? Na, da passt Erinnerungen doch optimal rein!

Die Bewerbung war schnell ausgefüllt und eine Einreichgebühr wurde glücklicherweise nicht erhoben. Ab damit!

Gestern bekam ich schließlich eine Mail vom Festival: »Congrats! We’ve reviewed your submission ›Memories‹ carefully and have decided to accept it for the upcoming #VOFF edition ›Relationship Status: It's Complicated‹.«

Yeah, Baby!

Nachdem ich mit dem im Kreis springen fertig war, habe ich mich ein wenig über das Festival schlau gemacht. Seitdem springe ich ununterbrochen und auch in anspruchsvolleren Figuren, denn das VOFF hat einiges zu bieten:

Da wäre zunächst einmal die Jury. Die besteht aus folgenden drei Kollegen:

Ted Hope

Mr. Hope ist Produzent, dem wir wenigstens zwei Filme zu verdanken haben, auf die ich nicht verzichten wollte: »American Splendor« mit dem genialen Paul Giamatti und der übergroßartige 21 Grams von Regie-Meister Alejandro González Iñárritu (»Amores Perros«, »Babel«, »Biutiful«), in dem Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg und Melissa Leo brillieren. Naomi Watts und Benicio del Toro wurden für ihre Leistungen in »21 Grams« 2004 für den Oscar nominiert.

Ted Hope selbst wurde unter anderem 2002 für einen Primetime Emmy für den Fernsehfilm »The Laramie Project« nominiert.

Timo Vuorensola

Timo Vuorensola war bereits ein Internetphänomen, bevor er seinen ersten abendfüllenden Spielfilm weltweit in die Kinos brachte. Bei David R. Ellis’ »Snakes on a Plane« war die Onlinegemeinde ob des bescheuerten Filmtitels und der Ankündigung, dass Samuel L. Jackson mitspielen würde, in freudiger Aufregung und bastelte in Foren fleißig an der Story mit. Schließlich hoffte man auf einen mainstreamig produzierten Trashfilm! Timo Vuorensola indes ließ nicht nur ebenfalls Filmfreaks und Witzbolde im Netz an der Story feilen, sondern schaffte es mit seiner äußerst bekloppt klingenden Geschichte auch, die surfenden Filmfreunde zum Crowdfunding zu animieren und so 900.000 € zu sammeln. Das restliche Budget wurde von diversen Produktionsfirmen gestemmt und final auf 7,5 Millionen Euro hochgeschraubt. Nicht schlecht für ein finnisches Independentfilmchen, in dem es darum geht, dass die Nazis die dunkle Seite des Mondes als Rückzug und Versteck nach dem verlorenen Weltkrieg nutzen und seitdem an ihrer Rückkehr basteln.

Vuorensolas nächster Film soll übrigens »I Killed Adolf Hitler« heißen. Iron Sky fand ich zwar nicht so dolle, aber der Mann scheint mir durchaus nicht unsympathisch zu sein. Und in Sachen Eigenvermarktung scheint er ziemlich großartig zu sein. Ich meine, wer hat denn nichts von »Iron Sky« mitbekommen? Von wegen hinterm Mond und so … 😉

Nora Tschirner

»Wie Feuer und Flamme«, »Soloalbum«, »Kebab Connection«, »FC Venus«, der schöne Kurzfilm »Alice im Niemandsland«, natürlich »Keinohrhasen« und »Zweiohrküken«, »Mord ist mein Geschäft, Liebling«, »Vorstadtkrokodile«, »Wickie und die starken Männer«, »Offroad«, seit Neuestem auch noch der »Tatort« aus Weimar, dazu noch Olli Schulz und der Hund Marie … An Nora Tschirner kommt man seit Jahren nicht vorbei und wer sie nicht kennt, hat dann auch sicherlich noch nie etwas von »Iron Sky« gehört. Soll heißen: Ich spare mir die Worte. Nora Tschirner sitzt in der Jury!

Als wäre diese Jury nicht schon genug, setzt das Viewster Online Film Festival noch einen drauf. Und zwar ordentlich!

Viewster

Viewster ist ein Video-on-Demand-Service, der in über 100 Ländern und mehr als zehn Sprachen verfügbar ist. Nach eigenen Angaben hat das VoD-Portal monatlich bis zu 20 Millionen Besucher! Die werden sich zwar nicht alle die Filme des Onlinefestivals reinziehen, aber wenn selbst nur jeder hundertste User reinklicken würde … Also über ein europaweites Publikum von vielleicht 200.000 Menschen würde ich mich nicht beschweren.

Das ist ja aber noch gar nicht der angekündigte ultimative Hammer! Der sieht nämlich so aus: Die »millions of viewers« (Zitat von der VOFF-Website) bestimmen mit ihren Bewertungen der qualifizierten Filme die sogenannte short list. Das sind die Filme, die ins Finale einziehen und übrigens erst dann von den drei Juroren begutachtet werden. Nora, Timo und Ted suchen sich schließlich ihre drei Lieblinge aus und – jetzt kommt’s – verteilen einen Arsch voll Kohle! Der Drittplatzierte bekommt 10.000 $, Rang 2 darf sich über 20.000 $ freuen und der Sieger – ich kippe wieder langsam vom Stuhl – der Sieger erhält 70.000 $!

Was haben Nora Tschirner, der Produzent von »21 Grams« und der Regisseur von »Iron Sky« also gemeinsam?

Richtig: Alle drei müssen unbedingt »Erinnerungen« zu sehen bekommen, damit wir die Chance auf ein schickes Budget für den nächsten Film haben!

Ja, das Geld würde in die nächste Filmproduktion fließen.

Daher bitte ich euch: teilt diesen Beitrag, erzählt es jedem, wirklich jedem, und vergesst dabei bitte nicht, auch selbst eure Wertung zu setzen. Das Festival läuft vom 12. bis 26. Juni. Vorher könnt ihr auch noch nicht abstimmen! Haut rein!

I’m on quite a few newsletter lists from festivals and festival submission portals. Sometimes, a promoted festival catches my attention, and since I actually do not submit Memories to festivals anymore, it has become very rare for me to submit the film these days. It happened again three weeks ago. The Viewster Online Film Festival (VOFF) is starting its second edition in June with the topic "Relationship Status: It’s Complicated". "Relationship Status: It’s Complicated"? Well, that sounds as if it was made for "Memories"!

The application form was quickly completed and, fortunately, there was no submission fee. Go for it!

Yesterday, I finally got an email from the festival: "Congrats! We’ve reviewed your submission ›Memories‹ carefully and have decided to accept it for the upcoming #VOFF edition ›Relationship Status: It's Complicated‹."

After I had finished jumping in circles, I did a little research on the festival. Since then, I have been jumping nonstop and in even more sophisticated figures, because the VOFF has some pretty cool things to offer:

First of all, there is the jury. It consists of the following people:

Ted Hope

Mr. Hope is a producer to whom we owe at least two films I would not want to miss: "American Splendor" with the brilliant Paul Giamatti and the more-than-great 21 Grams by master director Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Amores Perros", "Babel", "Biutiful"), in which Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Melissa Leo shine. Naomi Watts and Benicio del Toro were nominated for Academy Awards in 2004 for their performances in "21 Grams".

Ted Hope himself was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2002 for producing the TV movie "The Laramie Project".

Timo Vuorensola

Timo Vuorensola was already an internet phenomenon before he released his first feature film and brought it to cinemas worldwide. With David R. Ellis’ "Snakes on a Plane", the online community got excited because of the wonderfully stupid film title and the announcement that Samuel L. Jackson would be in it, and people in forums eagerly helped work on the story. After all, everyone was hoping for a mainstream-produced trash film! Timo Vuorensola, meanwhile, not only let film freaks and jokers on the internet work on the story, but also managed, with his extremely crazy-sounding idea for a film, to motivate online film fans to crowdfund it and raise €900,000. The rest of the budget came from various production companies and was eventually pushed up to €7.5 million. Not bad for a Finnish independent film about the Nazis using the dark side of the moon as a refuge and hiding place after losing the World War and working on their return ever since.

Vuorensola’s next film is supposed to be called "I Killed Adolf Hitler", by the way. I did not like Iron Sky all that much, but the guy seems pretty cool to me. And when it comes to self-promotion, he seems to be pretty great. I mean, who did not hear about "Iron Sky"? Those living behind the moon, maybe... 😉

Nora Tschirner

In the German version of this article, I simply listed the films Nora Tschirner has acted in. Well, those are German films and I doubt that you know them. But let me tell you that pretty much everybody in Germany knows sweet Nora, as she has appeared in some of the most successful German blockbusters of the past decade. If you live in Germany and have never heard of her... then you have most likely never heard of "Iron Sky" either. Enough said: Nora Tschirner is on the jury! Yeah!

As if this jury were not enough already, the Viewster Online Film Festival goes one better. Much better!

Viewster

Viewster is a video-on-demand service that is available in more than 100 countries and in over ten languages. By its own account, the VOD portal has up to 20 million visitors each month! Of course, not all of them will check out the nominated films, but even if only every hundredth user clicked in... I would not complain about a pan-European audience of maybe 200,000 people.

Well, this is actually not even the ultimate bombshell I announced! Here it is: The "millions of viewers" (quote from the VOFF website) determine the so-called short list with their ratings of the qualified films. Those are the films that make it into the final round and, by the way, only then are they reviewed by the three jurors. Nora, Timo and Ted eventually choose their three favorites and – here it comes – hand out a shitload of money! The third-place film gets $10,000, second place gets $20,000 and the winner – I am slowly falling off my chair again – the winner gets $70,000!

$70,000!!!

So, what do Nora Tschirner, the producer of "21 Grams" and the director of "Iron Sky" have in common?

Correct: All three of them absolutely have to see "Memories" so that we get the chance to secure a nice budget for the next film!

Yes, the money would be invested in the next film production.

Therefore, I am asking you: share this article, tell everyone, really everyone, and do not forget to rate the films yourself. The festival runs from June 12 to 26. There is no chance to vote before June 12! Dig in!
