Rien ne va plus? Nevada geht noch: »Erinnerungen« auf die 10!

Wir pirschen uns an Hollywood heran, denn heute kam die Nachricht, dass »Erinnerungen« im Herbst seine nächste US-Vorführung im nunmehr zehnten US-Bundesstaat hat. Rock und Roll! Hollywood? Naja, fast: In Nevada, dem Land des Glücksspiels – welches ja bekanntlich direkt neben Kalifornien gelegen ist – wird »Erinnerungen« vom 27. bis 30. September auf alles gehen: Wir sind beim Ruby Mountain Film Festival in Elko nominiert!

Jawohl, jenes Elko, welches Lowell Thomas vor 60 Jahren als »the last real cow town in the American West« bezeichnete. Die Gegend um Elko wird heute noch von vielen als »Cowboy Country« bezeichnet. Hier steht im Kino die Pferdetränke noch direkt neben dem Popcornautomaten! Der Ruf des Städtchens erreichte offenbar irgendwann auch Hollywood – ich sage ja: weit ist es nicht mehr! So kam es, dass ehrwürdige Stars wie Bing Crosby, Joel McRae und sogar James Stewart ihre Rinderherden in Beverly Hills ein- und in Elko als stolze Ranchbesitzer wieder auspackten. Selbst Wim Wenders entdeckte Elko für sich und drehte hier seinen Western »Don’t Come Knocking« mit Sam Shepard, Jessica Lange und »Mr. Orange«/»Pumpkin« Tim Roth.

Vielleicht war auch die Hollywood-Aura schuld daran, dass heute noch das alljährliche National Cowboy Poetry Gathering stattfindet. Wieso man aber jeden Juli in Elko auch das National Basque Festival austrägt, welches mit einem Augenzwinkern auch gerne mal als das »Basco Fiasco« bezeichnet wird, konnte ich nicht in Erfahrung bringen. Hier wird die baskische Kultur und deren wie auch immer geartete Verbundenheit zu Elko zelebriert. Die Art der Huldigung klingt dann aber – abgesehen von den baskischen Tänzen – eher cowboyesk: Strongman Competition und Bullenrennen … ich rede von den Tieren.

Hunter S. Thompson witzelte übrigens einst über Elko: »The federal government owns 90 % of this land, and most of it is useless for anything except weapons testing and poison-gas experiments.«

We are sneaking up on Hollywood, because today came the news that “Erinnerungen” (“Memories”) will have its next US screening this fall — in what is now its tenth US state. Rock and roll! Hollywood? Well, almost: In Nevada, the land of gambling – which, as we all know, is right next to California – “Memories” will be going all in from September 27 to 30: We have been nominated at the Ruby Mountain Film Festival in Elko!

Yes, that Elko, which Lowell Thomas described 60 years ago as “the last real cow town in the American West.” The area around Elko is still referred to by many as “Cowboy Country.” This is where the horse trough at the cinema is probably still right next to the popcorn machine! Apparently, the town’s reputation eventually reached Hollywood as well — I told you: we’re getting close! And so it happened that venerable stars such as Bing Crosby, Joel McRae and even James Stewart packed up their cattle herds in Beverly Hills and unpacked them again in Elko as proud ranch owners. Even Wim Wenders discovered Elko and shot his western “Don’t Come Knocking” here, starring Sam Shepard, Jessica Lange and “Mr. Orange”/“Pumpkin” Tim Roth.

Maybe that Hollywood aura is also to blame for the fact that the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering still takes place here today. Why Elko also hosts the National Basque Festival every July — jokingly referred to as the “Basco Fiasco” — I could not find out. The festival celebrates Basque culture and whatever kind of connection it may have to Elko. The form of worship, however – apart from the Basque dances – sounds rather cowboy-like: strongman competition and bull runs … and yes, I am talking about the animals.
