Ten Years! A Brief Look Back and Ahead…

Ich habe lange nichts mehr von mir hören lassen, aber es geht voran und mein neues Buch »Serendipity« wird in Bälde veröffentlicht.
Doch heute gibt es einen Grund zurückzuschauen: auf den 18. Januar 2005. Heute ist es exakt zehn Jahre her, dass ich ein Drehbuch beendete, welches wenige Monate später mein erster Film werden sollte: Die Treppe. Dieser Tag wurde gleichzeitig zum Gründungsdatum der Tupamaros Film Productions. Was ist seitdem passiert?
- Mein erster Kurzfilm, »Die Treppe«, wurde von einem großen Label unter Vertrag genommen, auf DVD veröffentlicht und mehrere tausend Male verkauft.
- Die Füchsin brachte mir leider viel Ärger mit einem vertragsbrüchigen Vertrieb ein. Eine lange und ätzende Geschichte, die – trotz eines Richterspruchs – noch immer kein Ende gefunden zu haben scheint …
- Bei Erinnerungen hingegen durfte ich mich über eine lange und recht erfolgreiche, weltweite Festivalsaison, ein paar Preise und Auszeichnungen und über die Veröffentlichung einer didaktischen DVD freuen. In diesem Jahr könnte der Film sogar zum Schwerpunktthema manch einer Abi-Arbeit in Baden-Württemberg werden.
- Mit Kaffee, Kiffer, Killerkatzen – Abenteuerurlaub auf Hawaii habe ich 2004 eher zufällig und unbeabsichtigt mein erstes Buch geschrieben. 2007 folgte dann schon mit mehr Absicht, aber noch immer nicht mit dem Gedanken, es jemals in den Handel zu bringen, mein zweites Buch: Anarchistenherz – Mit dem Rucksack durch Kuba. Mittlerweile besteht der Gedanke, die Bücher zu veröffentlichen. Mal sehen, ob es vielleicht schon 2015 mit wenigstens einem der beiden Bücher klappt …
- Bereits erhältlich und annähernd tausend Mal verkauft ist Curry-Competition – Mit dem Rucksack durch Thailand. Hinzu kommen einige positive Kritiken … und ein Verriss: »Eine Vergewaltigung der deutschen Sprache«. Haha, yeah!
- Und bald wird Serendipity – Die unverhofften Glücksfälle eines Backpackers in den USA veröffentlicht! Die Geschichte über meine abenteuerliche US-Reise wird als Doppelband erscheinen: zwei Bücher mit einem Umfang von etwas mehr als 300 Seiten plus ein Sammelband mit circa 600 Seiten. Außerdem steht die Produktion einer Hörbuchversion auf der Agenda für dieses Jahr. Bereitet Euch also auf ein paar nette Veröffentlichungen für 2015 vor! Da das Buch ohne Fotos erscheinen wird, wird es darüber hinaus mit dieser Website verquickt. Soll heißen: Jeder Käufer des Buchs hat kostenlosen Zugang zum neu eingerichteten Premiumbereich, auf dem Ihr massenhaft Fotos und Videos von meinen Reisen findet.
Wie Ihr sehen könnt, habe ich mich in den letzten Jahren nicht nur auf Filme konzentriert – diese habe ich wegen der Arbeiten an »Serendipity« in letzter Zeit sogar sträflich vernachlässigen müssen. Neben drei Filmen und den vier Büchern meiner Let Your Light Shine in the World-Reihe habe ich auch ein paar wenige Videoclips produziert und als schauspielender Kameramann und Cutter im Lost Cabaret, einer 1920er-Jahre-Show, mitgewirkt. Das »Lost Cabaret« wird 2015 hoffentlich (und wohl auch voraussichtlich) wieder zurückkehren. So wie es aussieht, wird dem »Cabaret der Verlorenen« in leicht abgeänderter Konzeption neues Leben eingehaucht. Wir werden sehen, was genau daraus wird.
Auch musikalisch soll bei mir etwas Neues starten! Was genau daraus wird und ab wann es hierzu etwas Zählbares zu berichten gibt, lässt sich allerdings noch nicht abschätzen … Ist noch ganz frisch! 🙂

Long time no see, but things are moving along nicely and my new book "Serendipity" will be released soon.
However, today there is a reason to look back: to January 18, 2005. Exactly ten years ago today, I finished writing a screenplay that would become my first short film a few months later: Stairway to Heaven. This date also became the founding day of Tupamaros Film Productions. What has happened since then?
- My first short film, "Stairway to Heaven" ("Die Treppe"), was picked up by a major label, released on DVD and sold several thousand times.
- Celine Dances Today (Die Füchsin) unfortunately brought me a lot of trouble with a distributor who breached the contract. A long and nasty story that – despite a court ruling – still does not seem to have found an end...
- Memories (Erinnerungen), on the other hand, had a long and fairly successful worldwide festival season, won a few prizes and awards and was released as an educational DVD. This year, the film could even become a focus topic in some Abitur papers in Baden-Württemberg.
- I wrote my first book, Coffee, Potheads, Zombie Cats – An Adventurous Journey Through Hawaii, more or less accidentally and unintentionally in 2004. In 2007, I wrote my second book, Heart of the Anarchist – Backpacking Through Cuba, with a bit more intention, but still without ever thinking of bringing it into stores. By now, the idea of publishing both books exists. Let’s see whether at least one of them might make it in 2015...
- Already available and sold almost a thousand times is my third book: Curry Competition – Backpacking Through Thailand. It has also received a few positive reviews – and one hatchet job: "A rape of the German language." Haha, yeah!
- And in 2015, Serendipity – A Backpacker’s Unexpected Strokes of Luck in the USA will be released! The story of my adventurous trip through the US will be published as a two-part edition: two books of a little more than 300 pages each, plus a collected edition of around 600 pages. Producing an audiobook version is also on the agenda for this year. So get ready for a few nice releases in 2015! Since the book will be published without photos, it will also be connected to this website. In other words: Every buyer of the book will get free access to the newly created premium area, where you will find tons of photos and videos from my travels.
As you can see, I have not only focused on filmmaking over the past few years – in fact, I have recently had to neglect it shamefully because of the work on "Serendipity". In addition to three films and the four books in my Let Your Light Shine in the World series, I have also produced a few video clips and taken part in the 1920s show Lost Cabaret as an acting camera operator and editor. The "Lost Cabaret" will hopefully (and probably) return in 2015. It looks as if the "Cabaret of the Lost" will be brought back to life with a slightly changed concept. We will see what exactly comes of it.
There might also be some new musical news from me in the future. What exactly that will be and when there will be anything concrete to report is still hard to say... It is all still very fresh! 🙂
