»Serendipity«: Die erste Lesung!

Zunächst einmal: »Serendipity«? Was soll das sein? Nun, ich bin noch immer auf der Suche nach einem passenden Titel für meinen US-Reisebericht. Dass der zu Beginn meiner Reise schamlos von den Dead Kennedys geklaute Titel »California über alles« herzlich wenig zum Bericht passt, wurde mir sehr schnell klar. Während meiner Reise mauserte sich vielmehr das schöne Wort »Serendipity« zu einem sehr passenden Titel und einem Leitmotiv für mein nächstes Buch, wobei ich hier noch Bedenken bezüglich der Vermarktung habe. Nicht allzu viele Menschen in den deutschsprachigen Gegenden dürften das Wort und dessen Bedeutung kennen, fürchte ich. Aber klingt schon schick, oder?

Und nun zum eigentlichen Thema: Kaum eine Woche nachdem ich mit dem Schreiben meines US-Reiseberichts fertig wurde, hatte ich bereits meine allererste Lesung überhaupt! Alexander Häusser, seines Zeichens Schriftsteller und Kollege aus dem Lost Cabaret, lud mich zur 8. Buchenlesung in Hamburg ein. Und was soll ich sagen: Dieser 8. Februar war ein großartiger Abend!
Ich las in einem mit knapp 40 Zuhörern randvoll gefüllten Treppenhaus vier Kapitel aus meinem Bericht vor. Das Publikum machte es mir mit seinen amüsierten Reaktionen und dem Interesse an meiner Geschichte leicht und ließ bei mir keinerlei Nervosität aufkommen. Da ich zwei Tage zuvor noch beim »Lost Cabaret« auf der Bühne stand und mit dem ersten Korrigieren des Berichts ebenso erst wenige Tage zuvor angefangen hatte, blieb keine Zeit, mir vor der Lesung die ausgewählten Texte im stillen Kämmerlein selbst einmal laut vorzulesen. Daher musste ich recht schnell feststellen, dass ich mit meinem geplanten Programm in der anvisierten Lesezeit von 60 Minuten unmöglich fertig werden kann. Dementsprechend musste ich beim Lesen ein wenig aufs Gas drücken – und benötigte am Ende dennoch rund 90 Minuten.

First of all: "Serendipity"? What’s that? Well, I’m still looking for a fitting title for my US travel report. I had to realize quite early during my trip that the title "California über alles" that I brazenly stole from the Dead Kennedys wouldn’t fit to my book. No, another word became sort of an regularly recuring motto and a leitmotif during my trip: the beautiful word "serendipity". So this might become the title for the book. But I’m not 100 % sure about it yet as it is a word most German speaking folks might not know and understand. We’ll see…

Whatever. Let’s get to the real topic of this article: I was invited for a readering, only more or less one week after I finished the writing process. It’s been my very first reading ever! Alexander Häusser, who is a author himself and a colleague from the Lost Cabaret invited me to Hamburg. And what shall I say: This February 8th became a fantastic evening!
I read four chapters in front of 40 listeners in a fully packed staircase. The audience made it an easy job for me as they reacted amused and interested. Nervousness? Thanks to those guys: Nope. I’ve been on stage at the »Lost Cabaret« only two days before and just started the first correcting process a few days before. So I didn’t have much time to prepare the reading. I didn’t manage to read the chosen chapters out loud to myself at home to check how long it will take to read them to an audience. So I had to face the fact that I won’t be able to read everything I wanted to read and also that I will get in trouble finishing only four chapters in 60 minutes. Accordingly, I had to read a bit faster – and finished after round about 90 minutes.
